Playing For Change Explained

Mark Johnson – Creator

It’s amazing what the diversity of all

the people in our world are capable

of creating when we all come together

& really put our minds to it…

We are all unique…  Each one of us has

special gifts & talents…  Some of us just focus

on developing them more than others…

May we all learn to find peace in our world.

To find it we must first learn to look for it.

This performance demonstrates what happens when some of the top street musicians from Playing For Change met & performed for the first time…  This song was recorded & filmed live in New Orleans…  It features Grandpa Elliot & Clarence Bekker on vocals…  Thousands of people witnessed first hand the soul & conviction of these two men who help us all believe that a change is going to come…

May we be reminded every day

to give all street artists respect…

These are not bums, but the messengers

of what life is really all about…

Just sharin’ the good vibes…

Dedicated to all of you who

are praying for change…

Grandpa Elliott

Grandpa Elliott Small, born Elliot Small in 1945, also known as Uncle Remus, is a street-musician in New Orleans, Louisiana. He plays the harmonica, sings, and is a street icon in New Orleans. He has been featured on Playing for Change in several episodes. His debut song with Playing for Change was “Stand by Me”.  He has also been on The Tonight Show and The Colbert Report. He has been a street icon on Royal Street in the French Quarter and Jackson Square in New Orleans since moving from New York City back to his place of birth in the 60’s. He performed to a crowd of more than 40,000 at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California, on June 30, 2009, playing the “Star Spangled Banner” on harmonica and singing “God Bless America.” His debut solo album, Sugar Sweet, was released November 3, 2009.

Grandpa Elliott has been playing on the streets of New Orleans since he was six years old and it is time for his music and passion to meet the masses.  Playing For Change recorded his album, Sugar Sweet, throughout the 2009 Playing For Change Band North American Tour.  It all started one evening at a barbecue when he began tapping his foot, slapping his hand against his knee and singing, “Your lips is so dog gone sweet to me, baby I’m afraid, if you kissed the ocean it would turn to lemonade…” I remember thinking we could not get to a studio fast enough!

I love this man with all my heart for his soul, sweet voice and power of conviction.  He performs each song as if it was his last and puts every ounce of his giant heart into every note.  Check out the album, support a great performer, and let’s teach the world that some of the best music we have ever heard comes from the streets!!!  From the people, for the people…

Playing For Change

***Stand By Me***

From the award-winning documentary, “Playing For Change: Peace Through Music”, comes the first of many “songs around the world” being released independently. Featured is a cover of the Ben E. King classic by musicians around the world adding their part to the song as it traveled the globe.Music is the international language of the soul, it’s something that reaches us individually, has a different meaning for each of us, but binds us together as one.
